Renovating a Basel Apartment.
This housing project is a collaboration between TERMINO and the architect T.DH.T (Thomas-Hall-Thompson).
The project involves the development of a 110 square meter apartment located in central Basel. The design integrates modern architectural elements with innovative kitchen solutions, creating a unique living space that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal.
Architectural Design and Features
The apartment features two distinct lines of structural elements:
-
Existing Concrete Columns: These are the original 'mushroom' concrete columns, which are a hallmark of the building’s previous structure.
-
New Timber Beams: Cross-laminated timber beams have been introduced, running perpendicular to the facade, providing both structural support and an organic contrast to the concrete.
The facade of the apartment is dynamic, with angular variations that create an intriguing exterior while allowing for a spacious and flexible interior layout. The facade design also ensures that natural light can penetrate deeply into the living spaces, enhancing the overall ambiance of the apartment.
Material and Aesthetic Integration
Wood plays a significant role in the project, with a majority of the structural elements and finishes utilizing this material. The extensive use of wood complements the industrial aesthetic of the TERMINO kitchen, creating a warm yet modern living environment. The choice of materials and the careful design of structural elements work together to harmonize the apartment's industrial kitchen feel with its residential comfort.
Innovative Kitchen Design
A key feature of this project is the implementation of TERMINO's kitchen module in an 'L' configuration. This is the first time TERMINO has adapted their kitchen system in this way, specifically to fit the unique corners and angles of the apartment. This 'L' system opens up the floor plan, making the kitchen and dining area more spacious and inviting, and it integrates seamlessly with the rest of the living space.
Furniture and Interior Elements
In addition to the kitchen, the apartment is furnished with carefully selected pieces that enhance the overall design. Notable among these is the 'FF01 Fatboy', a furniture piece that adds a modern, comfortable touch to the interior. The combination of these elements contributes to a cohesive and stylish living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
